The decision of the DENR to lift the open pit mining ban because majority of MICC members recommended it is utter disregard of the realities on the ground and its impacts in the watershed continuum. It has been told, time and again, that such will worsen disasters brought about by extreme weather conditions due to climate change. The ban may serve as safeguard to mitigate worsening impacts. Given the fact that the present mining law is not responsive to the country’s geographical circumstances, climate crisis and sustainable development, the MICC should focus more on reforming mining policies for the common good, social justice and ecosystems integrity.
